View Full Version : odd suspension problem

Finished up the suspension rebuild on the '55 today - installed a new lower trunion on the pass. side, and all new rubber bushings (left the upper trunion alone as it felt tight and worked freely.) Put everything together, dropped it on the ground, and the passenger side suspension is bound up tight! Doesn't move a bit. Any ideas why that could be? JP is thinking that it has to do with a slight misalignment we noticed when putting the upper and lower control arms back together at the knuckle (since I didn't replace the upper trunion, I dont think the kingpin is perfectly centered in the control arm - the driver's side went together like butter because I'd had both of those trunions apart) but I think that the rubber bushings should take that up OK. JP disconnected the shock but that isn't the problem. I'm fairly certain there's no tools left in strategic locations...

I'm not sure what you're calling the trunion Nate, but I'm with JP on this one. I know you don't want to hear this, but I'd pull it back apart and find out exactly why/where the misalignment is. Uhm, gotta ask, did ya put everything back right side down and correct front to rear orientation? (Don't ask how I know that they can be put back together wrong [:I]). The king bolt has to be perfectly aligned, straight up and down, at all angles/inclinations or it will bind up the whole mess.

I'm thinkin' that you're talking about the inner shaft, right?

LOL nope...

actually got a good idea from the newsgroup. someone suggested that I might have bound up on the camber adjustment bolt. I have gotten that bolt caught on the frame before, I don't know why I didn't think of it this time. Brain fade I guess. Something to check next weekend anyway.

Wouldn't it be great to have a Stude that drove like a new car? I have a dream...

Speaking of which... I keep forgetting... anyone know where one can get the little sleeves that go inside the bushings for the rear sway bar? I need ONE to complete my rear sway bar install. Apparently SASCO no gots. It looks like the kind of thing that OUGHT to be sold at your FLAPS ('cause it's probably used for shock bushings as well) but isn't.

hey nate i just went completely thru both my 50 champ frontend and the complete suspension on my 94 impala

i want to testify that my champ rides better than the impala and they are both 100% new and both lowered relatively the same amount and the champ rides lovely (cant get over how good it rides)

now the impala handles the curves and out perfoms the lil champ by a long shot but its okay im in the process of getting a new engine (secret weapon code name: studewhoa) for the champ that should blow anything on the streets away (at least in a straight line) lol :D
