  • 1949 stude truck, with a 1950 starlight front clip

Hello, Currently, A friend of mine and I are currently restoring a 1949 1/2 ton short bed truck( champ.) We were talking about putting a 1950 bullet front clip on a 1949 champ. truck. I would like your input on this. Has anybody out there done it???? Would it be hard to do?

The short answer - Yes, it would be hard to do.
The '49-'53 2R truck bodies and the '50-'51 car bodies are entirely different.
If your truck is a '49, it is a 2R, not a Champ (Champ trucks came out in the 1960 model year).

When I was about 14 or 15 I saw the first '50 Ford that had been customized this way. I remember thinking to myself, "Gee, I didn't know those Stude fenders would bolt-on to a Ford"! Truth is of course, they won't. But they can sure be blended in and look really cool. Today we see '50-'51 bullet nose and '53-'54 coupe front ends grafted onto late T-Birds and Camaros.

Mr. studegary, I have 2 champs plus 1 stude truck. I know that my truck is a 2R. It's just a habbit that i say champ. because of my starlights. Thanks for the correction

With a torch and a welder anything is possible. It's your eyes and brain that will determine if the end product is a success or a waste of two Studebakers.

This is just my opinion, of course, but why would you want to ruin the beautiful lines that Bob Bourke designed into that Studebaker pickup? Personally, I'm not fond of the grill from the 49-53 years, preferring the "grill bra" they added on to the front for 54-56. Maybe you can find one of those (not easy to find, I'm sure) and put that on instead. It would improve the looks immensely. Like I said, though, that's just my opinion.

I feel the same way about the 54-56 grille, the nicest looking ones on the C-Cabs.

Robert Bourke was very proud of that 1949-1953 2R grille in that it only cost $3 and change to produce. He was still at Studebaker for the '55-'56 grille, but not the '57 up fiberglass grille.
