  • Trunk Handle letters

On the trunk handle of my 51 Commander, between the keyhole and the 'S' script, are found the initials "HLS", cast in the metal. Anyone have an idea what they mean? My guess is "Hard Luck Studebaker", but I bet that's wrong...

I've seen other cars with different letters, I believe...

I ALWAYS WONDERED THAT MYSELF, I THOUGHT IT WAS A SUPPLIER'S MARK OR CODE.
THE LICENSE PLATE BRACKET HAS IT STAMPED ON ALSO.

HOW ABOUT "HOWARD'S LIGHTS AND STUFF"?

I'd bet a buck to a cop's donut that it has something to do with the Hurd Lock lock cylinders that were standard on Studebakers!
