I have a 64 GT Hawk. I am trying to remove the door and am having a problem. I have the hinges off but I am having a problem with trying to get this other part to disconnect. I think it is called a door check. Can someone give me a clue how to disconnect this so I can remove my door? I appreciate any help.

You need to remove the rivet that holds the door check to the door post. Carefully grind away the bottom side of the rivet and drive it up and out with a punch and a hammer. Replacement rivets are available from several Studebaker vendors, although I'm still not sure how you peen the end over on the car. I'd be interested in how others have done it?

Thanks a lot!!! that worked great. I appreciate your help. I did not want to have to do that if there was another way without removing the rivot but that gets the job done.

Frankly, I use a short 1/4-20 Allen head bolt and a nylock nut. Of course, this isn't STOCK. But then I like easy.:D

If you want to replace it with a stock door check pin, drop in the pin and hold a bodyman's dolly(basically hand held anvil) under the pin and hit the head with a hammer. Any substantial chunk of steel would suffice for the dolly.

I once had some neat door pins that had a female thread on one end. You'd drop them in, and thread a screw in on the bottom to hold them in place.

I found some pins at a local hardware store that sells farm related stuff that have a hole in the end and I just put a small cotter pin through that hole. You can't see the cotter pin unless you look under the check strap. If I need to take the door off again, it will be a lot easier (and safer on the door post paint!) than grinding the pin.
