As a NOS (New Old Studebaker) owner, I need to rebuild the front suspension on my '58 Silver Hawk. I have a shop manual. In the repair book, they talk about using a Spreader Tool J-2044, Bushing and Bearing Remover and Replacer set J-4477-A, and a Bushing Tool Set J-5472. Are these tools available? Can they be home made? Thank you for your help.

One of the vendors, Chuck Collins has the spreader tool. At the bottom of the home page at

Actualy, they can be improvised. Studebakerparts.com has a spreader you can buy I believe and the other pieces can be "fudged" by using various sockets and some cut sections of tubing.;)

Most of the pieces can be made of aluminum bar stock for the pressing of the spindle bushings you have to be careful of the way the bushings go in because they have groves that feed the upper bearing and if you put them in upside down it will never get lube, the other thing is the pin in the lower pivot it is best to push it out first by the car weight once you get the lower a arm off you will need a big press.Once you get the pin out the lower main pin slides out and you do not need the spreader tool but you will need it for instalation. But they are only $30.
