my oil pressure once my car warms up and is at and idle, only runs about 20 psi, and when i'm on the freeway it comes up to about 60-65 psi. is this normal or should i be worried. it has been like this since i bought it.

THIS IS NORMAL; THE BOOK ON MY '52 SAYS IT SHOULD BE FROM 20 TO 40 PSI @40 MPH. MINE IS ABOUT 60 WHEN IT'S COLD, BUT WARMED UP ON THE HIGHWAY IT STAYS RIGHT AT 40, AND IDLES AT ABOUT 20.
MY '64 V8 RUNS ABOUT 60 HOT AT HIWAY SPEEDS, AND IDLES 25-30.

Heck, the V8 in my Transtar runs about 30 hot at speed and barely moves the needle in hot idle. I've been thinkin' about gettin' worried about it - for 15 years or so now.;)

Mr Biggs, I have the same (about) readings on my '60 V8 1 ton.
5 psi or less at hot idle 30psi or so at 60-70 mph.
I was worried so I put an aftermarket gauge panel on it. Turns out what looks like somewhere between 0 and 5 psi is actually around 10-12 psi hot idle.

Most idiot lights don't come on until youdrop to 6psi![:0]Not good. 40psi running hot is about desirable.

When I rebuilt my 289 I had each journal polished and each bearing matched. One is 1/1000, a couple are 2/1000, etc. and polished the oil pump cap. When I start the engine it pegs the oil gage and it cruises hot at 75psi and idles at 60. I thoughtthis should concern me more than idling at10psi but it does not leak or burn oil and I've been reassured that the only thing that is happening is my oil is flying through the engine like a bat out of hell.

Yeah - that and stressing the hell outta your distributor/oil pump drive shaft. When the shear pin goes one day and your oil pressure drops to zero, shut it down real quick and pull off to the side of the road. [}:)] Unless you wanna thrash those pretty, polished, super-tolerance journals.[V]

rockne10 - Is your oil pressure relief valve working properly? Is it clean, moving freely and does it have the proper spring pressure? It sounds like it isn't working at all to me. What viscosity oil are you using?

Oil presure valve spring and seal were new and I'm running Rotella diesel-all. Run about 18,000 miles since rebuild.

I just put an oil gauge in mine to check the original gauge. I run 62 at cold and 60 on the road. Hot idle 15 and out of gear 20 at hot idle.
Question, is your Shell Rotella a 15-40 weight?

Yes, 15-40.
As I said, the high oil pressure is a concern. I like running 40psi hot and idling above 10. I hope the point that is beig made is Benny's oil pressure isbetter than good but not cause for concern.
