I believe it does have to do with the tach sender, and ISTR being told that you could just shave the Pertronix housing down a little with a box cutter to get the tach sender to fit. Of course your warranty is now void if you do this, but it is a viable option. I have no personal experience with this conversion so I am going off memory here.
