this is my first studebaker and the back of the eng is offset about one inch to the passangers side and leaning to the passengers side and that makes the drive shaft out of line.trans mount isnt broke.is that normal for a 51 champion.

You will find 2 sets of holes for the mounts on Studes the right holes are for left hand steering. For cars sent to Australia and England they used the left holes figuering that the offset for the steering clearance and the weight of the driver to ballance the car

Good observation!
And nothing to worry about.
Driveshaft alignment is very important and not always obvious.
The engine/driveshaft/differential (pinion) are NOT supposed to be perfectly aligned. There needs to be a slight misalignment to 'oscillate' the rollers in the u-joint to keep them rolling, or the rollers wil 'brinnel' into the trunion and cup of the u-joint. A rule of thumb is... Whatever degree of misalignment is built into the front joint is built out at the rear joint. An example would be +3 degree's at the trans should have -3degrees at the oinion. A 2 piece driveshaft just adds another angle to be concerned with. Some shaft mfr's even build a yoke phase misalignment of a degree or two just to make the oscillation occur.
Just carefully follow the shop manual, and be sure to mark the holes (or photograph) before disassembly to make sure the mounts all get back into the right holes.
Hope the info helps.

Is this car equipped with auto tranny or standard shift? Auto tranny cars have TWO rear mounts. One of these mounts has a longer stud on it to accomodate the thick spacer that effects the "offset" that we're talking about.

Yesterday, I was looking for a part out in the parts shed and one of the things I came across was a crossmember from a '51 Champion. I observed that indeed, the holes that the tranny mounts to ARE offset to the passenger's side.
As I'd mentioned earlier, auto tranny versions DO have a thick spacer that goes under one of the rear mount studs to push it to the right. But I wasn't sure about the standard shift setup. My observation yesterday proves that it IS correct for the standard shift tranny to sit a bit towards the right.
BTW, there ARE elongated holes in that crossmember for the auto tranny mounts. It's just that your car doesn't use them.
