When you have a V-8 front cover machined to accept a new type seal, can anyone tell me the number or type of seal used as the replacment? I would like to do the machining myself and also avoid time searching the books at my local auto parts store for one that might work. Thanks, dclewallen

On the front covers there are so many different ways of doing it and the covers themselves, do you have an aluminum cover or the steel cover? Do you want to put a slieve on your crank stub? The crank stub has a grove that slings oil back into the pan that will eat up some seals.I myself use on the aluminum cover a Chicago Rawhide 20012 seal they are good but some what pricy about $12and they are not a stocked item after special ordering and tax they come to about $18 The stub size is 2.008,the id of the cover without the flange is 2.950. You have to put the cover in a mill or good drill press fixture and bore it. Some people have had luck just grinding the flange but if you don't mind eating dust go ahead.There are more ways than one to skin a cat or seal a Stude.The choice is yours.

Ray Fichthorn has done dozen's, and his method seems pretty easy.
