Does anybody make an aluminum head for a 245? Also, how much does a 245 weigh?

Cathcart would know whether you can get a new one or not, but I suspect you will have to look for a vintage one. That engine apparently didn't have a whole lot of speed parts available for it, why I don't know because it's a nice, smooth-running engine, but it is fairly prehistoric in design (dates back to the Rockne)

As to weight I don't know but I would guess "a lot." :)

I know they made aluminum heads as well as dual carb manifold for the "Commander 6" They are rare to find. About a year ago someone had a tricked out 245 for sale on e-bay with dual carb, aluminum head and dual exhaust manifold. If I hadn't just rebuilt mine I would have bought it I think they wanted $2000.00 for it. As for weight I know I read that it was 40-60 lbs HEAVIER than the 232 V-8. Overall though it is a great engine and I am told that some larger valves and a bit of porting can really wake it up. But it's real virtue is super smoothness and loads of low end torque. This is due to the long stroke 4.75" in the 245 and very long rods which keeps the rod ratio small. Plus it has rod and main bearings larger than any stock big block V-8. I think the only one to have larger bearing is a 426 HEMI. I know a couple local chapter members that prefer their 226-245 over the 232 V-8 since they seem to be even more bullet proof than the V-8. Of course I don't know of any local memebers that ever have mecanical failures with any Stude engine.

Restore it, don't replace it.Keep the Studebaker reproduction industry going
