View Full Version : 2005 Winter Meet in Los Angeles

I went with friends, Dick Steinkamp and Tom Ewing to the '05 Studebaker Winter Meet in Los Angeles this past weekend. While the current spate of rainstorms certainly kept the usual turnout of Studes from appearing, there were enough pretty Studebakers and cool Studebaker folks in attendance to have a great time.
The meet was staged on the upper level of the parking garage for the Petersen Auto Museum. And given the way that structure's made, there was adequate shelterd parking to keep the cars & vendors dry.
I counted 5 vendors there and they had a nice array of Stude stuff to tempt one with. I even found a couple little bargains myself!
One inspiring thing I learned here was that a couple of local chapters are going to start a sure enough West Coast annual Stude/orphan car swap meet! This I learned while talking with Bud Gruver and Carl Thomason as we perused the offerings of one vendor.
I tried to generate interest for such an event for several years a few years back. Everyone was just sorta lukewarm about the idea. Now it looks like it just might fly! Great news! I know I'll be loadin' the ol' Transtar up with as much as it can carry.
The first ever of these swaps will take place in a casino parking lot in Compton, California on April 2nd. I'd say, don't miss it if you're into Studes! Let's hope this thing turns into the West Coast edition of York or Reidsville. There's LOTS of Stude stuff out this way that just needs a chance to be seen by wanting eyes!
After the Winter Meet, we were invited by Stude fanatic, Pat Drnec, to go to his business warehouse and see his Stude "collection". Pat's got a number of cool Studes in his stable. The real gem of them tho, is the two custom-crafted Studes that were originally bought and bodied by the coachbuilder, Frua in Italy. By the way, these cars have been recently written up in Turning Wheels.
Anyway, after money and waiting, Pat's got them in his shop and he's got a REAL challenge on his hands to bring one of them back to life. Serial #s on them reveal that they started life as 1960 Stude V8 cars. The bit of Stude firewall they retained in re-bodying the cars would lead you to believe they'd started out as Larks.
Being prototype vehicles, there wasn't much engineering figured in to make them easily servicable over time. A case and point are the door hinges. One leg is WELDED to the jamb and the other leg of the hinge is welded to the door. And after all these years (much spent rotting in an Italian salvage yard!), the hinge pins are REAL reluctant to come on out so the doors can come off! But, as I said - Pat's got a challenge there. Knowing Pat tho, he's gonna prevail in the end.;)

Good to hear about the all-Stude winter swap. Sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, the April 2 date (this year) conflicts with the big Portland swap meet, April 1-2-3, one that I've been going to for years. If it were the weekend preceding or following Portland, I might be able to take a week and a half off and do both. I'm sure I'm not the only one with such a dilemma given the conflicting dates.

I know that there will be a conflict with something on ANY given weekend, but IMHO, you don't want to conflict date-wise with one of the biggest old-car events on the West coast.

We did have a GREAT time in LA in spite of the weather. I wish Gord and Jerry could have made it. I also was encouraged to hear about the orphan swap meet, but since I'm also "committed" to Portland, I'll miss it. Portland has been an annual thing for me for the past 10-15 years due to the fact that it is one of the biggest meets on the West Coast, and it's a chance to swap lies and play cars with my PNW high school buddies. There is probably no time for the orphan meet that wouldn't conflict with SOMETHING...I just selfishly wish it didn't conflict with things I had planned.
