Are you talking about the timing gear cover or the valley cover???[?]

Well, I have yet to see my copy of TW but the main difference between the Avanti cover and the standard V8 CAM GEAR cover is that the Avanti piece has a little "scale" if you will for timing reference whereas the standard V8 has a simple pointer sticking out from the cover for timing reference.
Both covers are of the same material and sport a place to mount the fuel pump.
A common conversion of these covers now is to install a rubber lip seal in place of the old, original felt oil seal that rides the crankshaft hub, but all Stude V8s used the felt seal originally.
