  • Crank pulley bolt

I just changed the front seal on the cursed hawk and am wondering how to get the full 150 lbs of torque needed for the crank bolt. Any suggestions ?

Put the car in gear and block the wheels. Use the parking brake. I have also removed the starter and used a wooden block thru the starter hole to the flywheel, but that time I had a hell of a time getting the wooden block back out! I don't recommend the wooden block!

Good luck! By the way, I think the torque is only 135 lbs. Check your shop manual.

Good advice on checking that torque figure, they tend to strip easily. NEVER use the crank bolt on a Stude engine to try to turn an engine that you think is/may be stuck.

Sonny, on that note, I just had crank pulley puller-installer that fit chevy, ford and so forth but not the Stude as the crank bolt size is much different. I had a machinest friend make up a stude adaptor and bushing that would work with the puller-installer set. Worked great! Don't know where I got the 150!

There's a vendor that offers a crank hub puller-remover set now. E-mail me for a link.

Great! That danged crank pulley bolt is MUCH more "delicate" than it appears to be. It's been a real PITA on some of my projects, never stripped or broke one, but have been too close. I'm trying to collect and archive pictures of Stude specific tools. I'm posting them in the Racing Studebakers photo gallery for reference to all. Would it be possible to get a nice picture of it with all the pieces laid out? Thanks a million in advance!

I'll try to take pictures today. By the way, Vintage Air is making new Stude V8 crank bolts for their Stude AC kits. I'm sure they will sell the bolts seperatly.

Thanks a million in advance for the pictures and that's VERY good news about the Vintage Air crank bolts. I hope they're a better grade than the originals. Thanks for the heads up!
