The sending unit was so drity and caked with sut that I did not know what it looked like, after being in my parts washer for a couple of days it looks like a part. Now you've done it. I suppose someone should have told you that your gauge won't read correctly unless the sending unit is properly insulated from the atmosphere by the factory-provided gobbet of oil and dust.

Fortunately, driving the car a few miles with the rear valve cover nut slightly loose will more than adequately replenish this insulating layer.
