looking for stronger rear springs for my 53 k or 62-64 gt s stronger ? dont want to add a leaf didnt find info. on leaf spring rates on site I know one of you guys know thanks

The 53 has a different spring than the 62. Stude springs in the 5 leaf run approx 150 lbs. inch. We would need to know what you plan to do with it and what kind of ride you expect, plus a few more particulars of your ride to tell you much more.

The '57 and on Studebakers have an asymmetrical mounted axle, mounted forward of the spring center. So the "center" bolt will not line up with the wheelwell centerline when installed on the spring perches on a '53 frame.

A '56 Golden Hawk spring is probably your stiffest stock option for a '53, and can be duplicated by Detroit Eaton Spring Co.

Why is the spring different from the set up in a 1957 C/K to that of a 53? and are 56's the same a 53's and is there a difference between models in 56 C/K's.[:I] This is an interesting topic.[]

Mike Myer had a spring shop that he likes make new leaf springs for my Avanti. I suspect if you can find a good quality spring shop and tell them what you want and have your old set as a pattern they can make what ever you need.

                  I recommend
                  Oregon Auto Spring Service

                  Address: 920 SE Stark St
                  Portland, OR,

                  Toll Free: 800-423-6976

They make the springs from factory specifications for you. You can choose stiffer or softer than factory.
Plus, if you can bring the car in for installation, they will custom adjust the springs to make your car level.
They do vintage cars regularly. (I mean, really, how many 3 year old cars need new leaf springs?)

I drove my Edsel from Los Angeles to there (1000+ miles?) to have new leafs put on it, and if my Studebaker needed leafs, I would do it with that car too.

They will mail order you springs for you to put on yourself, if you really can't get the car to Portland, but the manufacture and custom installation service they do is worth the price.
Tell them how high you want the car to stand, and they will make it so.
                  Nice people, fair price, and

b51, The earlier than 58 spring had a .875" front eye with a 7/16" bolt. The 58 up had a 1 1/2" front eye and a 7/16" bolt. If you have a 53 with 4 leaves it is the wrong spring. It should be 5 leaf. Chrysler had a Super Stock spring that can be made to fit on the 58 up. But as Stude Rich says the distance from the center of the front eye to the center of the locating bolt of the spring pack is 20 1/4" on the Stude and 20 1/2" on the Chrysler. The problem is the Chrysler spring is 53 3/4" long eye to eye and the Stude is 48". By the time you have cut and re-rolled the rear spring eye you will have as much money in the Chrysler spring as if you went to Eaton Detroit Spring and had them make you up a custom spring. Also the difference in true arch is about 3" and the car will have a stink bug stance.

I am only guessing about your set up since you didn't put up much specifics. But take a look at the front end. Are the lower a-arms parallel to the ground? At the rear you can make up an inch or so with shackles. Best thing to do is string your car, then you have some measurements to work from and can see what the changes did.

I bought my 5 leaf springs at Cedar rapids last summer for my '54 K.They were new and $189 each from a vendor there. Don't remember his name but maybe some one knows.
