  • 6 Volt battery cables, where to buy

I can't seem to find a source to buy replacement, 6 volt, batt. cables for my '50 Champion. None in SI's catalog or web site, Napa, Ebay, etc. I want orig. replacement type, no puney cables. My +grd. is a flat braid, about 1.25 wide, and my neg. is about 9/16" dia. measured over the insulation. (maybe 6 ga.?)

    Thanks,
    Dick

If you are looking for nice ones, try YnZ. They have really nice ones. I got them for my '54 Champ coupe, 00 size. They were around $18 each at the time, about 12 years ago. Here is a link to their catalog:

I used 00 welding cable, and made my own, make them the length YOU want them, not the length that's available. After deciding on the lengths, and getting the correct ends, i coat the insides with flux, fill about half way with solder, then with a Map gas torch, heat it up and let the solder wick up the cable. Use heat shrink tube over the ends and you're good to go.

I agree with 52ragtop. I did the same thing on a '52 Commander and solved ALL starting problems.

We have an long-time battery shop in town. They remanufacture and sell new batteries. And CABLES. Used 1/0 Flex-a-prene heavy duty welding cable. Less than 10 minutes. With professional crimp terminals. Less than $10. [^]

He can do the flat braid, too. But I think he complained it comes from China now. [}]

Try your local tractor dealer. Our local John Deere dealer keeps those flat ground straps in stock in many different lengths. They also have the large size negative wires in many lengths including some over 2 feet long. These are still made for 6 volt tractor applications.

Go to any Semi tractor dealership, I work for a Freightliner dealer and we make them all the time. Easier and cheper to make them for big rigs rather than ordering them.

Our local NAPA makes them. They have a hydraulic crimp tool. You can also get a lot of factory-made cables in many lengths there.

I have them made locally at Batteries plus in 0 or 00 guage. Runs about $6-8 per cable. They are close by if you cant find anything local and need me to pick up a set for you. Steve
