I have a 61 Hawk 3spd/od. Someone replaced the original trans and driveshaft with a short tail trans and a two piece d.s. How do I make sure the center bearing is aligned? It is bolted to the floor. I don't know how the early cars were mounted, my parts books etc. only go back to 59. Also, will a slip yoke work in the short tail trans if I were to install a one piece d.s.? Thanks- JRL

A 1958 and on Studebaker slip yoke will not slide in a '57 & earlier Trans.
The center bearing support plate bolts to a frame crossmember with two special bolts and rubber cushions. You most likely have no crossmember in a '61 and need one from a '53-'57 C or K model.
The simplest fix is to replace the Trans. with a 4 speed or '58 to '64 3 speed O.D. [^]
