I have one also... that is not a Studebaker made gas cap... the "S" stands for Stant - the company who actually manufactured it.

Hmm, that looks similer to the one on my '58 commander parts car. Wonder if I should grab it before it gets crushed? I believe it was made by Stant, but I can't remember much else about them at the moment. They look perfect on stude's though. [8D]

Yeap, I was taken by one of these gas caps back in the early '70's. I was relatively new to Studebaker mysteries. Found one at a flea market and it was as nice as a NOS'er. I paid the price without bargaining because I just knew it was a Studebaker item.

I learned my lesson when I began vending Studebaker parts several years later. Put a good price on it. I carried it for several years, reduced the price and finally a nice gentleman told me it was not a legit Studebaker item. The S indicated Stant.

I think I gave it away some years ago as I didn't have the heart to sell it to an unsuspecting newby.

I have one of those Stant caps with a key, and at least I didn't pay much for it. I think it would look good on any 40s late 50s car, especially if it was a year where they used the Lazy S prominently, like the front of the 47

I use one on my Transtar... works just fine and most people have no idea it's not "Studebaker".

I bought one for my 49 2R5 but it didn't fit. I thought it meant Studebaker too but found out the truth later. I think I still have it out in the shed.

Just like the one on my '52 Commander when my father purchased it in the early '70s.

I have a new one in my case that I purchased from an old Studebaker dealer.

One of my first posts on these forums was about one. I picked it up at a flea market and had it for years thinking it was Studebaker. Still have it around somewhere with the keys. Just not taking as good a care of it now that it isn't Studebaker anymore.

I had one of those, NOS with the keys, and gave it to a good friend with a '52 Champion, because I thought it was a factory Stude item. Oh well, ya live and ya learn!

A Stude dealer would have been silly [u]not</u> to stock it since it certainly looks like a factory piece that would probably sell for less than an official Stude item.

It is odd, isn't it, that it "isn't Studebaker", as Stant seems to have made some parts for Studebaker. ISTR some trunk latch parts with a Stant number on them. Now, how they got away with using such a Lazy S without attracting the attention of a copyright lawyer or seven almost defies logic.

Look carefully at the pics Jim... it is not a Studebaker lazy "S". My understanding is that Stant made many different models of this cap - some fit Studebakers (like mine) and others do not (as stated by Jon S.).

My dads Avanti also has one of these caps and thought it to be a factory item since he bought the car in the early 70s from the original owner. They have an orininal look with the S on it and have a few NOS ones in my collection. Ed
