    Ok,

Time for a trans drain and new fluid...........what should I utilize for my new fluid??

    ...........mineral oil or full syn?

  • #2
I refilled the T-10 in my '63 Hawk last year with mineral oil. It worked good for all the previous years so I saw no reason to change. I purchased the last container of it from the local Conoco as it apparently is seldom used for any new applications, but I later found that the local NAPA has a fresh quantity of it. Does anyone know if the late model Fuller Roadranger truck transmissions are still using mineral oil? If so, mineral oil should be around for a long time.

I really like the Red Line MTL synthetic. It has made every transmission I've ever put it in shift like butter.

      thnx, jack vines

The late model Roadranger transmissions use synthetic SAE 50 gear lube. Regular SAE 50 gear lube is still available for the earlier Roadranger transmissions as we use both gear lubes in our trucks. I use GL-5 80W-90 gear lube in the T-10 in 62 Hawk with good results. I tried 75W-90 synthetic lube in it, but the synchros didn't want to hold as well. Bud

I use Shell Spirax GL-5 80W- 90 gear lube for most of my gear oil needs as I've gotten good service from their products. I believe that if you use lubricants from a reputable supplier such as Shell, Chevron, Valvoline or Pennzoil, you won't find much of a difference in lube performance. If you're looking for lube for a Fuller Roadranger transmission, the larger refiners can supply it for you. Bud

For what it's worth, the 1959-1964 shop manual warns not to use any gear lubricants that contain any extreme pressure (EP) ingredients such as lead, sulphur, or chlorine compounds in manual transmissions. It specifies to use SAE 80 mineral oil.

I'll have to check my Hawk's owners manual, but if I remember correctly, the 4 speed uses regular gear lube. I know that Studebakers with overdrive use SAE 90 GL-1 gear lube or SAE 40 engine oil. Bud

Ok tomorrow will be the big day.......drag the Avanti to my friends shop and wait till he has time to put me up on t he lift......then drain and re-fill the T10D.......Purchased a qt of Red Line MT-90....anyone have personal experience with this? Jon Myer claims his T10s shift amazing with Amsoil gear lube.

                    Anyone have opinions?...........

I used Redline MT90 after rebuilding my T-10. It will work as well as mineral spirits, meaning that it may not make a noticeable "feel" improvement. But, it will feel that way for a lot longer than no synthetic, as it guards against wear much better.

Worst part of the thing was re-filling.......draining no problem...but finding some kind of hand pump to push the new fluid in was a pain..........just kept pumping in fluid until the fluid started to run out of the top hole. Should be good for an additional 20 yrs!
