  • 1942 Black Out Cars

Did Studebaker ever build any black out cars in 1942? The ones with no chrome. Grills and bumpers were painted the same color as the car. Right after WW11 my stepdad bought a black out F##d. And also remember a 42 Pontiac the same way

I certainly won't say they didn't. But all of the '42's I've seen came with chrome. Of course I haven't seen very many either...

Yes they did, at least with minimal chrome.

I have never seen one, but this is from the book The Studebaker Century.

It looks like the grille has been painted and there are no headlight rims.

My early '46 M15A-28 has black out door handles. I believe Studebaker was using up war production inventory with these.

I have a steel center grill strip for a M truck.
                    Usually these are stainless.
I presume it is a blackout strip like the previous owner believed it to be.

There was a "blackout" 42 Commander for sale in Los Angeles not too long ago. Yes, they built a fair number of them.

I guess I became a car nut about 1946. My uncle came home from the war and started a garage in Chesapeake, Mo. I was only 6 years old but remember my uncle teaching me all the different kind of cars. I remember when the 47 Studebaker came out I saw it in a parade in Joplin, Mo.
