I have my 6v positive battery lead to the block and my negative lead to the starter solenoid. No wires coming off the solenoid for this test. When I start to connect to the battery, I get light sparking. Bad starter? Bad solenoind?

use a continuity tester (test light) to verify that the contact to the battery actually goes to ground. Remove the battery cable and touch the terminal on the solenoid and the body with the test light. If the bulb lights replace the solenoid.
If there are no wires coming off the solenoid, there isn't one going to the starter... hence the starter cannot be the problem.

The negative wire from the battery goes to the solenoid which is the push-button type mounted on the starter. And I had already removed the wires that supply the ignition switch, et al. I guess I need to pull the unit it out and bench test/inspect.
