  • It lives!!! And I drove it!!!

Well, Jim and I got the '40 started today. Aside from the ancient gas that gave the worst smell I have ever been around, it ran great! I even took it for a test drive around the yard. To top it off, that was the first time I have ever drove or rode in the '40, and the first time driving a Studebaker period![] Had a good day![8D]

Awesome! I can feel your joy! The lettering on your door can be removed with a little rubbing compound and a rag without damaging the black paint, if you're careful.

Fantastic! I'm happy for ya'. Great car and it only follows that that first ride will always be the greatest one.

Congrats Chris! Takes me back to my first run at the wheel of my '62, down Highway 89 near Alliston, Ontario, to try to get the old gal certified at a garage in the area. No seatbelts, a hood that wouldn't open, a decklid that wouldn't quite close, and (as things turned out) lots of electrical gremlins. But what an utter blast anyway...

(If you're going to get rid of that lettering on the door, maybe you ought to do it in stages...take advantage of the fact that the chimney guy's name was "Stokes" and make the lettering temporarily read "I'm Stoked"!)

Did you make any headway with the way-out-of-date title issues you were having with the '40?

                        S.

Wonderful news, Chris! Now, starts that labour of love, getting the old girl back into shape. Ah the joys of packing wheel bearings, rebuilding brake cylinders, crawling around underneath the greasy, dirty (dribbly-dirty) chassis.[}] Tons of fun. So very satisfying though...[^]

Way To Go Chris! Your story reminds me of my son's first car. When he was 14 We got and old 51 Champ Starlight. It was a sad,sad looking car. When we first got it running we were at a friends shop where there was a large open field out back. The car had no brakes yet but James backed it out of the shop and drove arourd the field, and finally let it coast to a stop. He was a happy young man. he just turned 38 and still has the car. It was on the cover of TW,Aug. 08. NT
