View Full Version : Tire trouble

Well crap!
Here I sit on the side I81 somewhere in Virginia (I think) and the right tire on the single axle trailer I am towing just disintergrated at about 78 MPH.
Took out the right tail light and curled the rear of the fender under pretty badly. I was in the hammer lane but all the other vehicles gave me plenty of room when they saw the rubber flying and I got over to the side of the expressway before I ruined the aluminum wheel.
Guess I'll get out and change the dang thing. I'm just glad it's not raining or snowing, although it is kind of chillie dot this pore ole southern country boy.
I will stop up here somewhere at the next good sized city and buy another tire. The spare is okay for a spare but it is a different size from the regular tires.

Gotta get out and do the nasty now. :-(

Studebakerdriversclub content..... I'm on my way to York
No, I don't have one of those. I was just trying to delay the nasty job. Changing a flat tire in the mud was not a fun job for this 67 year old youngster.I am at a tire store now buying two new trailer tires.
I was gonna get to York before sundown. Now, that ain't gonna happen.:-(

Thanks, but I have it covered.
I am in Roanoke at White Tire Company getting two nwe trailer tires.
Jeff Rice just called and said he's in a Winchester motel tonight and invited me to stay there tonight and make the short hop to York tomorrow morning. I'm going to take him up on his offer. Wrestling that tire has plum wore me out.

Hey, you're alive and your trailer didn't flip and jackknife. Good job! Not an easy task at 78 mph. You deserve a good night's rest. Have a safe trip in the morning. Tell Jeffy hello from all of us. [8D]

Ask Jeff if he needs any 2bbl intake cores. I could bring a few.

Glad your OK. Have a good trip from here on.

Time to get a tandem trailer, always have the wheels on the ground then, and can travel on 3 if needed, hope you didn't loose your Studebaker wheel cover??

Might hafta put a tube in that first one to get it to hold air (regular radial tire patches don't always hold when tire in question has medium sized puncture). LH

I think I'd go ahead and patch it, the trouble with a tube is - when its flat yer outta air! :D

Did the same thing going to a Denton Tx meet, 1999,/ 2000 I had Johnny Wiffer's car,. A 54 Land Cruiser on my trailer. Had a wheel on the the trailer that was from a 76 Caddy that had a tire in the trunk that was never used, looked brand new, but was actually 25+ years old. 250 miles from home it exploded like a cannon, scared the crap out of a Semi driver next to me. This was before dates on tires. I always check the date on tires now.

You're a trooper, Jerry. And that 55 trim piece that was bent by the USPS? My body guy says it's an easy fix. Enjoy the meet. I wish I was there. If you run into Paul Revell, he's looking for a gas door, hinge, and the attached springs for my 55K, for me. Good luck.

Jerry is now in the used tire business. He can fix you up real cheap. From what I understand all you will need is a patch.:D
