  • 64 Daytona tach

I'd sure like to mount an in-dash tachometer in one of my '64 Daytonas. But, my Stewart Warner and Summit catalogs list diameters of 3 3/8 then 5 inch as readily available. The instrument holes in the Daytona's dash are 4 1/2 inch. I'd plan on getting rid of the clock, and keeping the cluster gage and speedo. So, the problem is that what seems to be commercially available is just not the right diameter.

So, I'd like to ask if anyone else has had similar frustrations. I'd have to think that someone has found an aftermarket tach that would fit, and look good. Any ideas?

Anybody got a picture to share of a '64 Daytona dash with an original tach in it?

I have a dash out of a '64 Daytona 4-dr V-8, automatic, with single exhaust. The odd thing is that the car had a tach. Why anyone would order a tach option on this type of car is beyond me? Anyway, it was sitting in a junkyard about 40 miles from where I live. My brother ran across it while looking for an AM radio replacement for his '66 Cruiser. When he mentioned the vehicle had a tach, I thought possible R1 package or something good. However, when I went to the yard, it was nothing but a plain Daytona as described above. The engine and trans were already gone, among other things. But, since my brother wanted the radio, we bought the whole dash and had it removed by a local mechanic. The tach looks good, but I have no idea whether it will work or not. The car's probably been sitting there for 20 or more years. I think there's an old thread from last year where somebody posted a pic after I mentioned the find. I'll try to look it up.

I used a Sun Pro CP 7901 (chrome bezel) in my 64 Daytona CNV and a Sun Pro 7909 (black bezel) in my 63 Lark R2. Both required a little trimming of the plastic bezel in order to fit in the Studebaker bezel but connected directly to the coil.

I believe that the Larks with a tach came with a chrome plated pot metal bezel to allow a tach to be installed - the "factory" tachs were just GT Hawk tachs with a Lark pointer on them (except for the '64s which got a unique green face as well.)

So... you might want to try to find one of those, then you can use a 3-3/8" tach. (I think.) Might need some minor grinding/modification, not sure.

I spoke to a guy last summer that purchased a chrome tach adapter bezel for his '64 Challenger at SASCO. Perhaps Stude-Intl has some of these in stock?

Here's a pic from the earlier post. My '64 tach looks like this one.

You need to get the chrome bezel that fits the stock hole in the dash and then you can use a smaller size tach, Sasco had them so SI should have them from him if any were left, I don't see any in SI newest catalog but call them. here is a picture that is in my 63 standard, I do have an extra one if needed....Bob

From the research I've done, a 5 inch guage will fit the hole perfectly. Classic Instruments' 5" guages require a 4 1/2" hole to mount into the dash. I measured a spare guage panel I have for my '64 cruiser and it has 4 1/2" holes for the guages. I had planed on installing a set of Classic Instruments G-Stock guages in mine!

I notice that Classic's Tachs do not look as correct as Bob's, what brand is that Bob? Looks good for an aftermarket unit. []
