  • Studebaker in Yellowstone Park

After seeing Anne's post about old photos of the family made me think of my Aunt and Uncles yearly trips to Yellowstone National Park.

This second picture was taken by my Aunt. Looks like no place I would want to be.

That Bear looks just like he is having quite a conversation with them! Amazing! [^]

Don't feed the bears - even if they like Studebakers!

What did Fonzie Bear say about the natural habitat of bears?

We went there two years ago and found ourselves sharing a road with a herd of bison.
Many were larger than our Mini Cooper.

In Grant's Village campground in 1965, the bears made a regular daily tour of the garbage cans. Campers were cautioned on registration, but, as a medium-size black bear sauntered down the street, a woman came out the door of her little camper trailer with a skillet (!) and asked, "I wonder if he'd eat a pancake?"

A ranger almost tackled her, and snapped "Yeah lady, up to the elbow!"

That pancake line has become a standard saying in our family.

I've come thru Yellowstone on a motorcycle many times and never stopped for bear or bison. I will stop for the mules in the Blackhills. One will stand in the middle of the road and get you stopped and then the rest of the bandits show up, but they are harmless.

Amazing they had gas to go to Yellowstone in WW2, 1942. Was gas rationed in 1942?

I can remember a trip with my grandmother, dad, uncle and sister in my grandmother's 54 Commander from Washington to Montana through Glacier National Park in June 1958. Bears had their front paws on the drivers side of the car like these pics - I was on the inside, they were on the outside - frightening to anyone, let alone a 6 year old! My grandmother was sitting on the passenger side with the window rolled down throwing marshmallows over the roof of the car trying to get the bears off. Fast forward to 1981 when I was given the car - I found the entrance receipt to Glacier National Park from 1958 in the glove box of the Commander - still have it as a reminder of a good memory! Wish I had pics like these, but don't!

Your Aunt must loved and trusted each other very much for your Aunt to be convinced it would be safe to snap a shot from there with the bear that close. Thats great

What wonderful pictures! Thank you so much for sharing. We're huge fans of the National Parks and obviously more than a little fond of Studebakers, so these photos couldn't be more perfect. How exciting to have them as part of your family history!
