View Full Version : Dome light mal-function

Here's another way for the experts!

When I hook up my battery, the dome light comes on. This is a new occurrence. I had removed and cleaned up the corrosion in the pillar switch and the light worked fine, as it should have. Just recently, the dome light lights up with both rear doors closed and the pillar switch "off". The light is very dim, but bright when activated by an open door or pillar switch. I have to unhook the battery every time I leave the car, but am more concerned that I may have a short. Before I replaced my headliner, I checked all the wiring and it seemed fine. I also replaced one wire with 14 ga. that should have been 16 ga. wire.

My thoughts are, that I have bad door switch that's causing a voltage leak. These switches are original. Are they an item that goes bad over time, that a guy should replace every 20-30 years? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your imput.

start by pulling loose each of the door switches. just unscrew them and pull them through so there is no metal touching. The door swutches are grounding switches. this will eliminate them one at a time.

I agree with Rob. If the light still stays on, you probably do have a short. I had to rewire an unnoticed dome light wire on my Hawk because some dumb mouse thought it necessary to graze on the insulation.

Sounds like my place. I'm tempted to feed the neighbor's cat to get her to hang around more.

At least, if it is a short, it is on the ground, not the hot side (otherwise you would have smoke, etc.).

Dave, I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but if your car has a switch to turn the light on manually, is that switch off? Or maybe the problem is in that switch or the wiring or connections on the switch rather than the door switches.

John and all. I think you hit it on the head. Yesterday I messed with the pillar switch a bit and found that if the button wasn't precisely where it should be on its slide, the light wouldn't go off. There doesn't seem to be a true on or off with this pillar switch. I wish they had used a toggle-type switch and I wouldn't have had this problem.
Anyways the light has not come back on and I believe this was the problem. Thanks all.
