  • Pre-War Body Tag

    Can someone please help decipher a body i.d. tag on a Studebaker chassis for me?
    It reads as follows:
    <center>37AQ-1
    2039
    </center>
    Unless I am mistaken, I thought Studebaker did not use their two-digit year prefix until 1956, not as early as 1937.
    I understand the Q-1 means 3-passenger coupe, either "Regular" or "Custom" depending on the year & the 2039 is the production sequence of that particular body style.
    A "7A" would be a 1938 Commander, so then, where does the "3" come into play??
    Would this car be a 1937,'38 or another model year?
    Thanks much.

    1937 model 5A and 6A Dictators are identified by 37A on the body tag.
    Model 3C Presidents are identified by 37C.

      I think Studebaker 'painted themselves in a corner' over model and body tags more than once.
      A 1936 Dictator could be a model 3A or 4A (4A had the Planar front suspension). The 4A body tag was stamped 3A. Logically one would expect that 1937 body tags would advance to 4A, but you can see where they might have had a conflict with the previous years model designation. At least that's my guess!
