What does full flow mean when referencing a motor mean?

  • #2
Sometime in 1962, Studebaker switched from the optional partial flow oil filter to the full flow filter mounted opposite the starter on the back of the engine, on the passenger side. The partial flow filter caught a bit of the oil, filtered 100% of the oil in perhaps 5 minutes at highway speeds. The full flow filter took it straight from the pump, filtered it 100% then put it in the system under pressure.

It seems that the full flow engine was designed to keep higher pressure in the system, my '63 289 holds 50 lbs at 60 mph, my 53 '232, with the partial flow filter holds abut 20 lbs at 60 mph, hot.

Phil Harris, at Fairborn Studebaker can convert a partial flow engine to a full flow, but I don't know what pressure they maintain.
