  • New Alternator and New Wiring

  • #2
Most Studebakers equipped with a 12 volt system and a generator used 12 gauge wire from the charging system to the ammeter and back to the starter solenoid. 12 gauge wire is marginal for the 30 amp charging system and definately undersized for an alternator. I would recommend using 10 gauge wire as and upgrade because it will have a lower voltage drop than the 12 gauge wire. The ammeter will be fine if you use and alternator that is rated at 60 amps or less. If the battery is low the alternator can go to full output, but my girlfriends 63 Lark has a late model Delco alternator on it and there hasn't been a problem with the stock ammeter. Bud
