  • Found Ted Harbit pic in 1964 Super Stock Mag

    Here is is:

It's from the 1964 NHRA National Drag Championships at Indy.
The caption reads "The '62 National champion in M/S won the class again this year, but the '51 Studebaker of Ted Harbit was disqualified for too much overbore."
Sound to me like they were being too picky

A co worker gave me a box of car mags from the 60's. I'll post any other Stude items of interest..

Far from being picky, the 1964 disqualification had to be the low point of Ted's entire Studebaker drag-racing campaign...now in its 52nd year, if you consider that he first drag-raced a Studebaker circa 1955. You can read about the 1964 disqualification on Page 8 of the March 1996 Turning Wheels.

Briefly, they accused him of a .003, yes; three THOUSANDTHS overbore. The little 232 engine's bore hadn't been touched since passing NHRA's Tech Inspection after being runner-up in The 1963 Nationals the previous year, and the bore had again been approved only two weeks before the 1964 National Drags, during an authorized NHRA tear-down at The Muncie Dragway!!

Ted protested as strongly as he ever has, and letters-to-the-editor were exchanged nationally in Hot Rod magazine.

No matter, NHRA would not reverse their decision. Needless to say, that pretty well finished off Ted's already-tenuous affection for the National Hot Rod Association! [8D] BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

Thanks for filling in the blanks Bob. Sounds like it was all politics back then too!

I guess you-all know NHRA means "no hot rods allowed".
