View Full Version : Rear Brake Drum

I know this subject has been probably beat to death but I am a new owner of a 48 Champion and I am ready to pull the rear brake drums off. My question is, can I use a generic drum puller or is there a unique Studebaker rear drum puller. Any tips on using the puller or things to watch out for.

As long as its a tapered axle puller that pulls on the studs and pushes via a center screw against the end of the axle, it should work.
You know the drum and hub are removed as one "unit" or assembly???

I would get one from a Stude vendor or major tool company, the JCW and HF ones usually strip out when dealing with stubborn hub/drums.

Years ago I was pulling the hubs on a 51. I pulled one real easy and the other one didn't want to move. I tighted the puller up as tight as I could sprayed some knocker loose oil on it and went to work. The next morning I went down to the garage and it was laying on the floor. I guess you might say it pulled itself.

I'll repeat what Transtar60's said - just for emphasis... You HAVE TO USE THE CORRECT puller that takes not just the drum, but the hub off (at the same time) too! Not to do so will have you looking for a drum after you've distorted or busted yours.[xx(]

Thanks for the info. I read most of the forum questions, but sometimes it helps to have you guys repeat the message for us rookies especially when we are eyeballing the project for ourselves. The more I read in the shop manuals, it seems the Studebakers were ahead of their times in many aspects of the car.

90% sure on this, a puller that I have used is also one that you would use on your average jeep... 3 arms can be adjusted to where your studs are, then theres a little spinner do-dad that you tighten up. With the help of sledge hammer or BFH the drum pops off. I got buddy buddy with a shop nearby that works on modern cars, as well as jeeps and other misc. old cars. He lends it to me for the weekends. Apparently these type of pullers are hardly used these days. I guess my point is you don't have to spend coin on tools that you may use once in 2 years if you have a few connections.
