I have a 289 engine JTK 307. This engine has the standard crankshaft balancer like the regular 259 and 289 engines. I was wondering if this is the correct balancer for this engine or if it is supposed to have the wider balancer. Thanks

No, it should have pn 1558279. It's the wide one with the belt groove in it.

Yep, and the correct balancer is on ebay now, or new ones are being sold by the vendors.

Thanks Randy. I thought it was the incorrect balancer. Perhaps that contributed to its early demise.

If you pull this one apart, you will find out if it is missing the rest of the "goodies" also. To name a few valuable pieces:

          High lift cam
          baffled oil pan
          crankcase breather for oil pan
          Aluminum Cam Gear
          high compression flat top pistons
          1557570 Heads
          maybe even the 289 crank!
          large AFB Intake
          AFB Carb.
          Dual Point Dist.
          Chrome Valve Covers & Caps
          Chrome dipstick and tube
flash Chromed (Satin) non-silenced Air Cleaner
High Output Carter "super" fuel pump
24 Degree timing mark Timing Gear Cover
          Viscous drive fan & clutch
          Heavy duty water pump
          40 AMP Prestolite Alternator

          This date coded engine is a 1964 R1. []

          Good luck.

Sorry about your ebay search window being broken, I found it on the first try!

It looks to be the wide, single belt pulley used on '57-'58 GH, Packard Hawk and R2 Lark/Hawk.

That balancer is scary! It would be ok on a show car or maybe a once in a while driver. I know that I'll take a some abuse for saying this.
With the rubber deteriorating like that, I would be afraid of it breaking loose and going through what ever is in the path.[:0]

Look at the price on that part. What do these usually sell for?

Usually right around $225.00 to $250.00 the new reproductions of the '63-'64 version are only $200.00, but before those were available 9 mos or so ago and three years before that, people like ATR could clean and Paint one of those and put it up on ebay with no reserve and collect whatever two or more bidders could afford, no problem! [:0]
And you can bet it was WAY more than $200.00!
I don't think you can go quite that far anymore. [^]
