I have a 64 Cruiser,with hubcaps that will rotate, bending the valve stem to the point of breaking. I understand Studebaker had a fix. If so, does anyone have information. To date I have balanced wheels both on and off the car. Rebuilt the front end. Replaced the rims. Any help would be appricated.

On the later wheels (your cruiser should have them), a couple of little "bumps" were added to the rim on either side of the valve stem. This kept the hubcaps from turning. I've never had a problem with these wheels (the earlier ones without the bumps, yes). Is it possible that your wheels have been replaced with the earlier type? Check for the bumps.

I looked at the rims, no bumps.Also looked at the old rims, no bumps. Guess the previous owner replaced for what ever reason.

If you plan on getting new wheels, here's temporary and very effective fix. Get a tube of Marine Goop at Lowes. Pull the hubcaps, clean the edges and put a dab on the cap and rim at 6" intervals. Wait 10 minutes and put the cap on, aligning the dabs. I guarantee you that the caps will NOT move. I drove over 10000 miles with caps done like this on 59 Hawk rims and radial tires. They never budged.

I ran into the same problem with my 59 Impala. It had the bumps that are suppose to lock the hubcaps on. My mechanic reached into his bag of tricks and wrapped the hubcap edges with electrical Vinyl tape. He went around the hubcaps about three times with the tape, and now they are there to stay they don't rotate any longer, and no more broken valve stems.

My neighbor, just walked over and said "working on that thing again". Then he also made a sugestion, use stick on weights! Then have the wheels rebalanced, the fix is final.

My '65 Cruiser had it's original wheels on it when I bought it with just 69K miles showing. Those wheelcovers never stayed on (or in one place), so I put small caps on it until I got my current set of wheels. For daily driving I have a set of 6" wheels and some non-Stude caps. Those original wheels are now waiting to be repainted and used just for shows...

A Studebaker friend from Canada faxed a letter. The letter is from Studebaker of Canada,Limited dated Dec 30, 1964. Number 851. Subject: Wheel Disc Anti-Creep Retainer--1964 Model Passenger Cars. From: Harrison Shaw.
In brief the letter discribes the installation of Wheel Cover Retainer Part #1564199. Retainer is attached with Epoxy. Located approximately 11/32" back from vertical edge of wheel rim centered from the valve stem.
I do not think I will ever find one, at least I know they were used.
Thanks for the input, now just to make the decision on which method to use.

I put one 1564199 on each wheel of my 64 Daytona 30 years ago and have never had a hubcap problem since -- even with the Astro-strut covers, which are notorious for severing valve stems and/or falling off. The 1564199 retainers are available from SASCO -- $7.30 apiece.

I did not know the retainers were still available, thank you for the info. I did not even think to look in the SASCO book.[B)]

Just for the record, the same info was provided in Stude Service Letter C-1964-1 of December 2, 1964.

I've never had that problem using Chrysler wheels, but if one wants to stick with the old Stude wheels, would arc welding a couple of short beads do the same thing as the newer Stude "bumps" Dick mentioned?
