Walt, I believe the official SDC answer, as posted in the Co-Operator, is that the Stude trannies are fairly tolerant of fluid type, and will work OK with either Dexron III or Type F. The original fill was, IIRC, Type A, suffix A, which is no longer made. Dexron III more than meets its requirements, though. Type F should give you a crisper shift because of it's friction characteristics.

Speaking personally, I have used both, even mixed them, with no observable ill effects. My current GT has Dexron III in it, and works just fine.

I'm sure if I'm wrong here, Bob Palma or Dwain Grindinger will speak up and make it known.:D

as an old time trans guy my informed opinion is to use dexron. as mentioned there are differencens between type f and dexron and the clutch linings are different to accomodate the differences in lubricity. long term usage will be affected. we used to use type f in both gm and chrysler trans for drag racing, tighter shifts, but they didn't last too long. good luck
