  • 51 Champion Trunk Handle Trim?

Good afternoon. Does some kind of glass or plastic insert go into the big "S", and what do the initials HLS stamped above the big S stand for?

    Regards,
    Clarence

The big S stands for STANT They are the ones that made them. So I was told years ago.

The big S is for Studebaker. And I'd bet a buck to a cop's donut that the HLS has something to do with Hurd Locks that Studebaker used.

Stant made caps for fuel and coolant systems. I doubt they had anything to do with this trunk ornament/latch/taglite assy.

I still say S stands for STANT. Studebaker never made a S like that.

Okay, but there is a pinhole down inside the big S that might be where some kind of glass or similar emblem was mounted into the inset-- anyone have an assembly like this, or know if it is missing a piece?

              Hi Clarence,

I have a 1951 Starlight and the original trunk piece is exactly like yours. I also have a much nice spare and it is the same.
I haven't seen any that had any kind of "insert" or "emblem" in it.

The pin hole is used to remove the lock assembly. Insert a small drill bit or wire and push in to release the lock.
The body parts book illustration depicts the squared-off 'S' and even the 'HLS'.
The squared-off 'S' can also be seen on horn buttons used in late '40s to early '50s.

There was never any insert in that S. Painted white maybe, but no insert.
