The seal that goes around the steering column through the firewall is missing on my truck. I found a the metal trim and what appears to be an approporiate gasket. Currently in addition to the steering column and the shift linkage, the speedometer cable is running through the hole. I suspect that the speedometer cable needs to be re-routed through another hole in the firewall. Am I right?

Column has a foam seal that goes around the column at the firewall. the oval metal retainer you have should be 2 pieces. The bigger piece has a gap in it so it can go over the column. Then 2 pieces come together and are screwed to the firewall with foam between firewall and retainer. The speedo cable goes through there as well, not through another opening. The seal used to reproed from a couple of vendors. Catharts is one, I think.
