  • Power Steering Question

    I am in the final stages of restoring a 66 Daytona SS.It has a 283 V8,p/s p/b and AC The engine was started last week for the 1 st time and immediately the front wheels turned to the right.The only way to turn them back was to shut the engine off,when I started it again,it turned right again.It has new power steering hoses and the ram was rebuilt, any suggestions ???

          It is a new chevy pump,the steering box

            the steering box was not rebuilt, but it cannot be the cause of the problem

              Could be a stuck control valve or possibly the new pump may put out too much pressure.

                Reverse the hoses on the power cylinder...

                    I had that happen the other day on mine when I started. had the two hoses backward that led to the cylinder.
                    Switched them and it stop pulling to one side.

                      I have reversed the hoses to the ram as suggested by three people, NO CHANGE

                        Sounds like you need to get a kit for your control valve. There's a spool valve in there, with springs on either end to center it. Could be one of the springs is broken, or else the valve spool has become jammed for some reason.

                        SI, amongst others, has the control valve kits. The unit is not too hard to take apart.

                          POWER STEERING PROBLEM RESOLVED---Took a large hammer hit the pitman arm in both directions.. control valve must have been stuck,steering works very well now.Thanks for all the suggestions

                            Sometimes it takes brute force and awkwardness to solve some problems. I guess that's what the BFH is for.
