  • Headlight Ring ID (help)

Need help from one of you Stude experts. Headlight ring # 556497 FR1
What did it fit. Which rings came plated and which did not?
Does anyone have a NOS or mint aftermarket ring from Hella for a Hawk?

That number appears to be no good as a Stude number. It's not listed in any of my parts price list books. Like Bob said, we need a photo.

That's probably the manufacturer's part number, not Studebaker's. I think it unlikely that Hella made headlight rims for Studes, at least on this side of the pond. Or are you talking about the retaining ring that holds the headlight in place? I'm sure Hella makes retaining rings for standard 7" headlights. They would not be unique to Studes.

Headlight ring # 556497 to be a good Studebaker part number it would have to be 1556497 or 536497 neither check out. It does seem to be CLOSE to a Stude. number. [:0]
Usually, purchased item castings have the Mfg's. casting number, NOT Studebaker, but not always.

I am assuming this is a real Trim Ring, end item (outside visible) Headlight Rim?

The canted forward at the top type, like a '57 Chev. are '56-'57 Sedan and came both primed and Chromed depending on trim level.

I sent Bob pictures via direct e-mail. Yes it is a headlight door and yes I was almost positve it was Studebaker maybe 53 to 55 ???
I was never plated, and yes there are other # cast in the back.
BS 1004 A to go along with the 556497 number.
And as far as the hella door I have it is a chrome plated Brass ring that is a little deeper than the stock 56 rings I have. I also have one that is almost identicle except it is a Bosch ring.
I like all of these better than the stock Stude rings because they are rounded on the front rather than flat.

They pictures he send are the 53-61 c/k and 53-55 sedans looks to have been painted or just dull pot metal gray anyway, I have never seen one that was not chromed unless someone painted it to fit their car color ...Bob

'53-'55? Didn't some of the Cheapie sedans have painted headlight doors?

Sure the Custom trim level Sedans did, they did not build those in C or K models.

I assumed they were 53-55 sedan, but they are a different shape from my 56 C/K. the fronts are rounded and the tab that locks the ring to the fender is different.

There are 2 different lock tabs for those rings. Not sure when they changed. Steve

I'm pretty sure I have one painted C/K headlamp door in my stash, and it has a flat surface on its front edge, not rounded. Maybe '53 C3 models?

Yes. That is what I was thinking as I read down, until I got to your post.
