  • 6 volt starter bendix vs 12 volt

The search function is useless to me -- so here goes,
I know this has been touched on before, what is the difference between a 6 volt starter bendix and 12 volt starter bendix?

One difference is the diameter of the gear section. Possibly the 12 volt is smaller, wait for confirmation.

And if you substitute one for the other without changing the ring gear the only thing that will happen is some REALLY ugly noises when you try to start the engine.

I just had a 6 volt starter rebuilt with 12 volt internals so that I would not have to change the ring gear. The armature also had to be replaced because I had burned it up trying to start a vapor locked engine during a parade. This made it more expensive but, at least I now have a 12 volt starter and won't worry about overheating it anymore.

Actually a 6 volt starter works just fine in a 12 volt car as long as the ring gear matches. The starter really doesn't care as long as you don't overheat it, and it spins the engine nice and fast.

The 6 volt has a thicker armature shaft and less teeth. The 12 volt has a smaller shaft and more teeth. The way my 6 volt was done, was to turner the armature shaft down to accept the 12 volt starter drive.
                How was yours done?

My 6volt starter was converted to 12volt. It does make a noise I don't like when starting up. So, with your info, I'm sure the bendix teeth are the problem. I will see if I can find another 6volt starter and just use it. I will pull this one and see how many teeth are on it.

FWIW, I've converted several 6V cars and trucks to 12V and never changed the starter. If the engine starts immediately, as a good Stude V8 should, the 6V starter will last forever on 12V.

I'm missing something here, wouldn't you have to put a bushing in the 6 volt bendix so it would fit on the smaller 12 volt shaft, in order to match the bendix and ring gear?
