  • Fiberglas racing GT

    Seller says:

A guy emailed me, and wanted to know if this car had a fiberglass front end and top, and fiberglass bolt on quarter panels. This car has all of these features. He says if it does, it is a factory race car,and they only made about 80 of these cars to races Mercedes on a road course race.

    Is there such a thing??

In any case, I like the color![8D]

Yea. And a 331 Cadillac was also an option in '53. I know it's true, my uncle has one.

Aren't fiberglass body panels just as heavy as steel body panels? This story sounds unlikely to me.

Is that the correct upholstery for that year? Mine looks a little bit different; almost like a comfortweave material. I emailed him about the fiberglas top; to see if he meant roof.

They go through the trouble of making fiberglass panels and then bolt on all the stainless and pot metal trim, cut holes in the fenders for vents and put the side vent mechanism in!?

What would even prompt that kind of question? I've never seen anyone else ask it on other GT listings.

The company is going out of business and they build 80 racecars to compete with a brand they import into the states? 80 Racecars! They couldn't build enough fiberglass Avantis to give their dealers one to show.

It does have the "Lluminized exhaust and Craiger Mags" though.

Ya I know it sure sounds like a pile of horse hockey pucks, but I learn something new every day. Well, except last tuesday.

Perhaps the fiberglass in the body panels that he is referring to is body filler.

I got an email back from the seller and they state that the entire roof is, in fact, fiberglass.

Then I'd buy it with a notarized statement attesting that was a fact.

Race car huh?...Musta been pretty mellow races when you could equip the car with an AM radio to entertain you while you competed. Then you could lean back and gaze at the fancy bows of the neat perforated headliner where you wish a roll bar should be...and of course you will need a keyed ignition switch for those frequent pit stops at the 7/11 for a refreshing Slurpee. Yep...real race car...driven by that famous former bootlegger "Smokeupyourtailpipe" Roberts!

Maybe the owner posted the wrong pics as he meant to post pics of an Avanti.

The only fiberglass body panels on any production Hawks were the fins on 1956 Golden Hawks.

There have been fiberglass replacement panels for replacement of rusted or damaged factory steel panels.
