I have an NOS set (left and right) side grilles for a 57 - 61 hawk in original boxes. Given the price of chroming and (I think) the rarity of these, I am wondering what is a fair price. Someone wants them.

they also fit the 56 hawks, have seen them go for as much as $500.00 each as good nos items..Bob

If they are correct for '56,57 & '58 they are NOT correct for '59-'61 unless you remove the "pans" and they are a PITA to replace! [:0]
The '56-'58's have no holes for the grilles or a dimple and hole for the round Parking Lights.

If they are without shelf wear and pitting, or with very minimal they should bring $1000.00 a pair.

So which are they?

I dunno--times is tuff, they might only go for around $700. I just doubt that they are in show condition after all these years.

I also figure 700. At the Gettysburg meet 1980, I bought a NOS set for 50.00 and center NOS for 30. That was a real good price even by 1980 standards. jimmijim

Thank you for all your suggestions.

Regretfully, no pics, but they are very nice. I don't think they have been out of the box except recently.

A trusted SDC member "found" them in my stuff, has them, and now we are trying to settle on a fair price.

I'm a little reluctant to discount them off because I have some cars they will fit. Years ago, I sold some NOS taillight bezels for a song, then I went to rechome my good driver quality ones. BAM!! my rechromed ones cost me much more than the NOS ones I had sold! And they can never be as good as NOS ones. Life lesson learned.

I think they would be very tough to replace, and I am not in a rush to discount sell. Things are only "new" once.

Paul

PS: he got really good prices on the other used stuff, and he builds good cars.

If they are nos in the box good chance they are only the chrome shell part with out the pan, any pan can then be put in side, 56 and 57 silver hawk used the clean pan,57 & 58 golden hawks used the clean pan and stainless strips after that they used the pan with the spot for the round turn light in it and in the cars built in Canada used the chrome one on the 62 GT's

The original replacement Hawk side grilles were only sold complete with pans, since they are riveted, they could NOT be dependably replaced at the Dealer. Only owner modified ones are screwed together or without pans.

The Chrome '62 GT Hawk (1 yr. only) side grilles (Canadian & Export only) are are the fourth type, with a wide parking light dent for a big rectangular parking light. Then there are the U.S. ones; bare pot metal or prime for paint topcoat.

I bought a NOS pair made for the '61's for $450 three years ago. I am dubious on the $1000 price as every other meet they show up in original boxes. What you need to do for a 56J is remove the tabs holding the inserts on. Then to install the 56 inserts you tap a hole and use small screws. I am quite sure some one will pay $1000 a pair, but that means they are worth that to that one guy. Now with Ed R going through the SASCO stuff, who knows how many he will find based on what he has found already. I picked up last summer NOS check marks for a 56J, paid $200.

And what has Mr. R. found, so far?

I did some calling around. For a price of $1000 I could sell both side grilles and Hawk grille and make a profit after having tooling made to repro them in "chrome" plastic. The tooling/moulds are a flat core and cavity, with a shallow parting line. Problem, raising the money and two, the biggie, finding a customer who would opt for them. Sell enough and the price would drop down considerably.
