        Actually, I have both a 59 and a 60 Lark.

From my inquires over the years, there seems to be an early AND a late 59 insert.
The early grill is the more egg crate look, where as the late 59 and 60 has the more straight line (or reqtangular) look.

And yes, there is the same look to the interior inlet grills between the grill and headlights.

I had my 59 grill insert rechromed about a year and a half ago........$350..! They did a very nice job though.

The chrome grill surround (when used) is the same for both years.

Fred: you have a '61, '62 or '63 if it is larger (wider) than '59-'60, because as Keoni said, the Regal Grille MOULDINGS not only interchange, but are THE SAME between '59 and '60! [:0]

OR...one has the moulding attached, take a closer look at these two pics of the meshes, all five Lark grilles ARE completely DIFFERENT! [:0]

And Mike, what you may have heard years ago, is that Studebaker discontinued the '59 Grille mesh (possibly in the mid to late 1960's) by simply SUPERCEEDING it by the 1960 mesh. So that is not the same as building '59 cars with early and late grilles. And yes that made '59 meshes extremely rare in NOS condition! []

Exactly right, Rich. I had a conversation with Dennis about that very thing. They just figured no one would care about the mesh differences in the late sixties since they were the same size. I have a NOS '59 mesh in the box. He told me I could get whatever I wanted for it, but no one ever seems interested at any meet. $60 versions of the '60 mesh at the SASCO table seemed much more appealing every time.

Something that most probably haven't noticed is the whole headlight panel is actually a little different between '59 and '60 also. While the outside looks identical, the inner structure under the hood has at least one small difference. The '59 has no provision for a second horn up top like a '60 because they mounted it opposite the other horn down low on the inner fender. The '60s have a raised indent on top of the panel with a hole for the second horn. Just one of the little things I noticed, having a couple of both cars.

I suppose you want real money for that NOS '59 mesh don't you Dave.[?]

'59 - hands down. Classically understated mesh; asymmetric placement of the more discreet Hawk/S-P-style badge; simply functional bars on the vent grilles.

                      Well... you asked...

Yep, as usual Keoni is on top of it! [^] Yes without a doubt the '59 front end! Much more aesthetically designed. []

I happen to personally prefer the complete 1960 model year car however!
As is often the case, the original is usually the best design though.

By the way Keoni, those are the BEST front end pics of a couple of very nice Larks! [^] []

Are the bumper guards correct in the pics? It seems the ones on the 60 are too far apart.

I don't know if there was a right or wrong way to place the bumper guards. The factory could of had a standard placement procedure and possibly if they were dealer installed they may have been placed wherever the shop man deemed them to be appropriate. When I first bought my 60 Lark in 1971, the guards were as shown on the 1960 in this post. I prefer them spread farther apart. I wish I had the answer. Any bumper guard specialists care to chime in. jimmijim

I guess one person's aesthetic, or asymmetrical preference is another's mismatched, thrown together design. To me they should have matched all of the grill meshes and actually had a Lark emblem ready to go in the first place. I understand the history of their previous Hawk successes and why they did it, but how silly was it to put those Hawk emblems on the horn button and on the grill? Why sell 1959 buyers a brand new model of Studebaker only to throw an emblem from another car on it? They were on their last breath and stretching many previous parts, but that seemed more like an obvious cheap (we've got a whole warehouse full of those things!) mistake than a design win.
I've even seen confused eBayers selling the '59s as "early Hawk Larks" because of those! [:0]
Personally, I prefer the '59 grill & the placement of that emblem, but wish the panel didn't come with what would become the Champ turn signal grills. I feel that's why designers matched everything later... it wasn't aesthetically sound to them. I don't understand why they didn't stick with the '59 grills and build the new turn signals to match them, though. One would think that would have saved money. Not a big difference. They moved the emblem back to the driver's side in '61 for the same aesthetic, asymmetrical reason, I bet.

Scott is right, if you replace the front grill, you have to check for that horn recess when buying one. They made all '59-'60 front panels that way after the first year. A real NOS '59 front panel is even more rare to find. The grill hole size is the same, though. Not so, for the '61s.

Does Skinny's garage need a grill mesh to keep, or sell off to the growing Marshal market?
