...in order for the new rack and pinion hardware to fit properly. Need one about 3/4" shorter. Have called Studebaker International but they have not called back. Any ideas? Thanks.

They may not call back as they do not give out technical information, and do not sell NEW Starters. The only difference I have ever seen is Automatic vs Standard Trans. there are no short starters. You would need to move the rack.

Might want to check with Fairborn, I thought they either sold or knew who did a more compact high torque starter.

Are you still running 6V? If not, what starter are you using now? The early Delcos were longer than the 61-only version. The latter would be my pick if it'll work for you. Only one I have is on my car though so I can't get measurements for you at the moment. (didn't deliberately pick the '61 version; I was just going through JDP's pile of starters looking for a good "rattle can rebuildable" stickshift Delco.)
