Whomever did the lighting for the '53 and '54 Champion dashes did a great job [^]



I was amazed how visible things are when I first "powered up" the dash lighting on my '53 the first time. Nowadays they probably use computer CAD modeling on the dash optics but in those days it would have been a bit of art, science, experience, and trial-error testing

well, they hit a couple of my favorites, the '61-62 and '55, but no Speedster or '56-61 Hawk? In my mind at least those last two pretty much define what a proper dashboard should look like (with an honorable mention to the early Porsche 911)

Jeff, either you made a time exposure on your '53 or you've still got 6 volt bulbs in there. I can see mine, but not if a car is approaching with his lights on. Yes, my '53 is still 6 volt. My '55 is twelve volt, I need the lights on to see the instruments in the day time.

Forgot about this old post.... Tom, those are 12v bulbs. The camera probably makes it look a little brighter than reality tho as you can see that the shift indicator on the column is "bloomed" a bit. It was on auto and I did note a slow shutter.... Still, though I have no problem seeing the gauges night or day. Not sure why the '55 would be dim. Did those use glow in the dark paint that's gone bad? Don't think the '53 had that, just careful use of white paint in the inside/backside of the housing and that gold trim paint on the mask.
