  • Valve Covers

My 62 Champ has a 259 v8 with a stand alone center oil filler which has a breather cap. The valve covers also have oil filler caps w/breathers in them. Would there be any harm in putting valve covers on with no oil fillers/breathes in them? I have an extra pair I would like to paint up and put on.

OR..."clean" up the engine by changing the old fashioned filler pipe to a block-off plate like a '63-'64 engine should have. The only reason you could need that pipe, is to mount an oil filter on it if there is no full-flow underneath, which there probably is! [^]

Yours is probably a full flow block. (oil filter screws on below? )
I'd leave it like it is., but the change can be made.

Sounds like an early '62 (pre-full flow) with NO filter. The later '62s and on had no oil filler tube. Look at the lower side of the block on the passenger side. If there is no filter, you have the earlier engine.
There shouldn't be any problem using the cap-less valve covers if it isn't a full flow. If it is a full flow, you need those caps for crankcase venting.

Some late 1962 Champs came with the standpipe mounted Partial flow filter and a block off plate over the full flow filter mount on the lower right rear of the block.

My 7E7 was like that and had only the cap on the filler pipe.

Mel, short answer - YES, you can do that and not have any adverse effects.
