  • Source for headlights?

OK, this is weird... I need new headlight bulbs. User Manual specs #4001 for low-beam, #4002 for high-beam. Common parts, right? Not! None at any of my FLAPS, no online listings from NAPA, AutoZone or any others that I can think of.

Any suggestions? Who'd have thought these would be hard to come by!

Nobody makes round, sealed beam headlights anymore?? Heavy trucks still used them in the 1980's and many heavy trucks of that era are still being used commercially. Maybe try an International truck dealer?

The numbers are different. Current numbers are H5001 (high) and H5006 (high/low)

Or if you want to really see, get a pair of E-code reflectors with H4/H1 bulbs and some relays to switch the power directly from the back of the alternator to the headlights.

Thanks for the x-ref, Nate! Sure would be nice if they would put that on the freakin' boxes!

Unless it's a show car go with the high output halogens (with relays). That's what I've got in my Champ and its got the best headlights of any vehicle I've ever driven.

Without the relay it can get interesting... as I found out one dark foggy night on the Blue Ridge Parkway when my headlights went out!

How could an Auto Parts Store NOT know what the current very common round four headlight system replacement sealed beam numbers are, much less NOT have them in stock??

I can't speak for all of them, but at NAPA the guys were on it. They looked up the part, and told me that while the 5001 would fit, it ran at 50 watts while the original 4001 was rated at 37.5 watts. They didn't want to recommend a part that drew more juice than the original.

Could the wiring and headlamp switch be that close to tolerance that 12.5 watts would be too much?? Doesnt sound the way Studebaker usually did things. I have halogen sealed beams in all my cars. Havent had a problem in one yet.

Since incandescent bulbs are going (forced) the way of the Dodo bird, aren't our cars gonna look silly with the curly flourescent (CFL) bulbs sticking out of the headlight pods.[?][:0][:0][B)][B)][V][}][)][)][]

All I can add is if you go with the new brighter bulbs use relays!!!! I learned the hard way. Went for my first night cruise and turned my lights on my 56 wagon. Was at a red light and the car in front of me gave me the figure more then once. At first I thought it was not ment for me BUT it was. You see it seemed my headlights were flashing off and on and he thought I was telling him to go through the red light. I couldn't tell they were doing this until it got darker outside. Anyhow determined the brighter bulbs were tripping my light switch (built in) breaker(never knew it had one) installed a relay on both high and low and never a problem again.

The curly flourescent (CFL) bulbs sticking out of the headlight pods will be bad enough, but if we have an accident we will get a bill to pay for hazmat teams to clean up the mercury.
