Why do you want (or need) to change it? Better performance? Twin traction rear? Flanged axles? What transmission do you have now?

The later model Jeep rear ends, although they are called Dana 44's are not the same as the earlier Dana 44's as used in Studebakers.

Make sure it's offset to one side about 1 1/2" so your driveshaft won't hit the tunnel on bumps. The aerostar and ranger 2 are offset both in opposite directions.

Is that opposite to the Studebaker or opposite of each other?

Opposite of each other. The Aerostar is offset one way and the Ranger ll (the little ranger) is offset the other way. They have the same length axles, just on opposite sides.

Ah I guess the big ranger was before my time.
I have always referred to the little ranger as the Ford Ranger.

Won't an early Falcon/Comet/Mustang V8 axle fit too? With moving the spring perches at least.

I think Buddymander was referring to the 1965 - 1981 full size Ford pickups which were offered with a Ranger (and also Ranger XLT) trim styling package.

This is a 1979 Ford F-150 Ranger. I think there is a 'Ranger' name badge on the upper side cowel. I believe the wheelcovers are from a newer pickup.

I guess I am a bit confused. There are plenty of Stude Dana 44s around why look for something else to force fit into it. Unless you are planning on putting some sort of hyped up BBC into it the Hawk this makes no sense. I have priced out ring and pinion sets for these and there are plenty of ratios available. If you need more beef then buy the flanged axle kit from Fairborn Studebaker, I did!

I've got a 3.31 TT with new flanged axles. Email me through the forum if interested.

It's more than just flanged axles and available ratios. Studebaker rearends are way too wide for most wheel tire combinations to clear the fenders. So, after you find the wheels and tires you want, then find the rearend that will place those tires midway in the wheelwell. My back wheels are 15 x 7 with 235 70 and a normal backspacing, and I had to narrow the rear 2 1/2" overall for the tires to be centered. But I'm going with a nine and different wheels, so I'm selling the rearend and all four wires. My sidewall measures 10 1/2" but there's still at least two inches left; combined inside and out, so I'd say an 11 1/2" tire should clear easily enough. I'm going 15 X 8 with about a 255 60, but of that I'm not certain yet.
