My old 55 pick up which has been in a state of neglect for many years breathed fire today for the first time this century. Original plans were to rebuild the 224 it came with. but finances dictated we take a different route. You know finances and flood waters can do that.
My son wants to drive the old truck so we decided to replace the 224 with a 259 form a 57 Commander that has been taking up space in my shop for longer than I care to remember.
James and I both had the day off today so we set out to button it up enough to see if it would crank. We put in new points, hooked up the I/V bottle of gas, hot-wired it. and spun it over. After a few turns it choughed, spit, popped, and sputtered to life. With only a head pipe hooked to the exaust, it made so much noise and smoke that the bloodhound started howling, the horse started whinnying, the yard dogs came to see what was on fire, and a black snake that had been hiding in the shop decided to head for tall timber.Since it does not yet have a radiator it only ran for alittle while. it seemed to only be running on 6 or 7 cylinders. So we peplaced the plugs,James came out with a set of copper core plug wires. After installing those we thought ample cooling of time had passed so we fired it up again. this time it purred like a kitten. Most of the smoke stopped, and the animals didn't seem to care this time. NT

Great! For some reason I am partial to '55's regardless of what is powering them.

well, John, being that the young lady looks so much like her mother, one can conclude that the looks in the family reside with Mum.

You know... I'm not partial to the '55 cars at all. But that truck is simply... as beautiful as the young lady behind the wheel.[:X][^];)

Not much progress on the 55 today. #1 son came over to work on it today, but his Mama was off work today and headed him off at the pass with a HONEY-DO list that I needed help with.(at least that,s what I told her) After moving several vehicles that had accumulated in the front yard back to the shop, fixing the roof on the barn, moving some fence so the horse could eat, and reinstalling the freshly painted hood on her GT hawk. We got to work on it a little. The front sheet metal has been removed for some body work. James wanted it to be able to move under it,s own power. Kinda difficult without a cooling system. We mounted the radiator support on the frame, ran some braces back to the firewall, and installed a radiator. It turned into a cool looking rat rod. James has some old teardrop headlights from somthing out of the 30's. He said he may mount those on it and drive that way for awhile. NT

I spent the day cutting grass and trimming shrubs. [xx(] Maybe I can head to the shop tomorrow and work on my truck too. :)
