  • new owner, lots of basic questions

hello, nice to meet y'all. we just bought a 64 cruiser. 64V14948

we're going to need some of everything--upholstery, paint, maintenance parts, upgrade parts, repro parts.

we are in San Francisco, Ca., and we would love to know of local resources.

are there codes on data plates on the car that can help me track down correct exterior and interior colors, etc? where and how do i decode them? orig. paint appears to be a very dark reddish brown or maroon

also this car appears to have been in the yellowstone chapter of SDC at some point in the past....and recently comes from Montana by way of Utah. anyone recognize it?

    please email me......tedbrinkley@sbcglobal.net

    thanks profusely in advance

also, our newly purchased 64 cruiser appears to have oversized tires and rims...what are correct original stock sizes?

    thanks,

The car would've had bias ply tires on it originally, but unless you're going for a show-winning redo, radials give ALOT better ride. While 195-75-15s would be an optimal cross-over, 205-75-15s work well and are readily available, whereas it's tough to find appropriate 195s at this time.

Contacting the Studebaker museum and giving them a fee will get you a copy of your car's original production order which would reveal paint, interior and accessory codes as well as the date built and more. There MAY be the original paint code sticker still glued to the underside of the glove box liner. You'll have to look up from under the dash to find it.

Join SDC if you haven't already and contact Bob Peterson, who lives in the bay area. He posts here under the name candbstudebakers.

        Ted, welcome to the Forum!

Here's the link to the Museum's page to order your build sheet:

For parts and conversation you also might want to try Rich Gahlbeck at Studebakers Northwest (goes under StudeRich here on the Forum), and there's also Studebakers West in Redwood City.

Post some pics; we'd love to see the car!

To answer this directly - 6.50x15 were standard and 6.70x15 were optional.

Studebakers West is right in the San Francisco area.

Join the Studebaker Drivers Club, from this site, and you learn about vendors/parts/history/etc.

Welcome! You have a nice car. I have owned four 1964 Cruisers.

thanks for all of your replies so far....

i have 215/?/15s on there now....and like i said they seem too big--there is rubbing on turns. i will go to 195s or something like that and see how they do.

i guess my rims are stock---the hubcaps look stock.

                will post some pics soon

i joined SDC.....anyone here from nearby local chapters can tell us when the next local/regional meet is scheduled?

                thanks,

this car has a hood release cable routed under the dash, but i suspect this is a jury-rig, not stock. did 64 cruisers' hoods originally have an exterior release latch on the front grille somewhere? if so, can anyone point me to a photo?

let me know if i am being a pest

                  TIA

Good grief! I've been here for nearly 2 years and "they" haven't run ME off yet!

It's gonna take more than one thread and a few posts for you to gain that kind of notoriety. Keep trying.

Welcome to the forum and the Club. I bought my first Stude last summer and have met a lot of great people here.

My '50 has a hood release lever in the dash from the factory. Studebaker was one of the first US car companies to do that....

Welcome to SDC. Yoou are definitely in the right place. Stock hood release is under the left side of the dash and should have a red handle.
