View Full Version : A Post Office story with a Studebaker connection

I received an e-mail today from Steve Pinter an SDC member with the BC Coastal Chapter...

"In 1996 Canada Post issued a Studebaker Stamp featuring a yellow 1950 Starlight coupe. Around the same time, I discovered that the downtown Vancouver (BC) Post Office had large banners (18 x 12 feet[:0]) featuring the Studebaker stamp.
I went in and asked what would happen to the banners when they were done with them, left my card, and didnít think about it any more. This past June I got a phone call from the Manager - Employee Communications, Pacific Region, Canada Post. He asked if I was still interested in the banners - I said of course!:) He asked what I intended to do with them. I said there are three Studebaker Chapters in British Columbia and it would be nice if each chapter could have one. He got an okay from Ottawa, (Ontario-head office) to dispose of the banners. This past week I got another call from him saying that all three banners were down. I picked them up the other day with my Wagonaire."

Steve's trusty Wagonaire with the banners on board:

One of 3 identical banners produced by the Post Office, one soon to be in the possession of each BC SDC Chapter. :)

Thanks Steve! (and the Post Office!) ;)[8D][^]

Oh man! What a score on that treasure. And to think they might have ended up in the landfill.[xx(] Glad they went to all the right places.[8D]

That is really nice and amazing after 13 years.

The car looks more like a 1950 Commander than a 1950 Champion, to me.

How great is this! What a great find. Thanks for looking out for those banners and spreading the wealth.

Now for those of us south of the boarder, do you reckon the USPS has any promotional stuff lying around with the Studebaker stamps on them?

You raise a good point - I intend to suggest to Steve that he submit a story and pics to TW for inclusion in a future issue. ;)[^]

Great initiative!

PS. you might want to send a thank you letter..or better yet, if you write a Turning Wheels article, send the Post Office officals you dealt with a copy.
If your postal service is anything like ours, they'd LOVE a bit of good PR.

That just goes to show you that sometimes all you have to do is ask. I remember when I was a postmaster, I used to hope someone would express an interest in some of the many cool stamp posters we would get. I hated to just throw them out. Whenever I got an inquiry, I would write that customer's name on the back of the poster and give them a call when it was time to take it down.

It was good PR and more publicity for the Postal Service.

You bet, part of the deal is that each Chapter will send the official at the Post Office a "thank-you" letter. :);)

Cool STuff! I've admired those banners several times on trips to Vancouver. What i want to know is: Where did the three model T banners go that were hangning with the stude ones? Evan

Maybe Craig P. will chime in... when I picked up the banner yesterday, Steve recalled that the subject car belonged to a SDC member from the Calgary AB area in the mid 1990's... Craig??

Yes, they used Vern Spencer's car for a reference in 1992/3 for a series of 6 cars that were 'Made in Canada'. The stamps were issued in 1994.

A Champion! The artist at the Post Office obviously had no artistic merit wheh it came to reproducing cars.[8]
